China Me

52 minutes - 2011

CHINA ME explores the rising phenomenon of individualism that is replacing the crumbling Chinese traditional society in the current race towards Progress. With no blueprint to create their own identity, individuals now seek professional help. Faced with this growing demand, new-age, self-taught psychologists offer solutions that are both common and eccentric.

In a small village in China, a peasant woman is desperate enough to drown herself. On a university campus, a student from an ethnic minority suffers from a near mental breakdown. In a Beijing suburb, a father threatens to stop eating because his son won’t obey him anymore. In a slum on the other side of the city, a husband and wife sacrifice their own happiness for the future of their young daughter.

CHINA ME explore these stories of Chinese men and women struggling to create their own destiny while the ground keeps shifting.
